Food and wine

Sauvignon blanc and mussels - in the Marlborough personality

Regions of New Zealand can emphasise distinctive features – and Marlborough is expressing its contemporary personality through food and wine.

More than wine

Producers of lamb, mutton, beef, cheese, tomatoes, apricots and other fruits and vegetables used to be prominent amongst Marlborough’s locals. Other livestock and horticultural products have risen and fallen in response to market forces.

Now vineyards, whose flagship is sauvignon blanc, symbolize more than production. Sauvignon and increasingly other varieties such as pinot noir are synonymous with Marlborough’s international identity, and with it, the names on wine labels.

From the prisitine waters

From the sea come mussels and salmon, sold internationally and prepared and labeled for consumers in various ways.

Brought together, and augmented by other locally available foods, seafood and wine, enable fine cuisine to be offered in public and private places.

Cuisine from winemakers' cultures

The arrival of chefs, winemakers and people with different food traditions has led to a demand for and supply of distinctive cuisine.

The slow food movement – a response in part to the fast food culture – is taking root amongst people with food and wine responsibilities in Marlborough.
